4 tech fights, 4 minutes, 4 everyone
Intro: Another session from the father-in-law’s pub in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mike from darwinshome.za.net is here again, taking me to task on browsers. Apparently Firefox is not so much more secure than IE. And the winner is…?
Fight: IE 7 vs Firefox
- Mike: IE 7 (even beta 2)
- Tom: Firefox
- Reported browser security flaws
- History of the 31 browsers
- Opera?
Too long! We’ll fight some more in the next episode…

This casts just asks for flamming (both you tom and mike). “Safari sucks”… dangerous comment. I happen to use Safari from time to time (quite alot really when on my mac). It was also one of the reasons I bought my iMac (for cross-browser testing) and now I dont mind it.
Have a look at http://5thirtyone.com/archives/489. There we go Mike, thumbnailed browsing for Safari. You’ll also notice that this is an OmniWeb feature.
I’m not going to go into Opera, they lost my interest back in their advertising days. I do use it on my smartphone though. Mike was right there. Opera Mobile is pretty sweet.
While mentioning webdevving. Check out http://browsershots.org. Helps you get screenshots of your websites in (i think) about 20 different browsers. Also mentioning webdevving, FireFox has a very cool native JS debugger and that rocks.
To wrap up my comment, I use IE6/7. FireFox, Flock and Safari. Each for its own purpose. One of the things you taught me Tom…. “Depends on the purpose”

Rheinard; I would agree with your comment on getting flamed when I support Firefox, but you must do your research before you tell us what safari has, and does not have.
I immediately discredit your 5thirtyone site because of the writers comment saying that safari is faster. Mozillia happens to be faster: http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html (check out the full graphs)
Secondly, all our comments were directed at browsers in their “out of box state” No updates, upgrades or extensions added.
That’s why we brought up the Firefox extensions as an advantage of Firefox, but didn’t include any actual extension in the tech fight. 5thirtyone is telling you about features that can either be purchased, or are free, to ADD on to the browser. And please link me directly to the thumbnail view option it has… I don’t see it on the site. As for OmniWeb, I hope a browser that I must PAY $29.95 for AND that works ONLY on MAC has thumbnail view support.
Browsershots is a great idea, but way too slow when you are developing 3 to 5 websites a week. You want to test the websites locally, real-time, hence the need to have multiple browsers on my PC at once.
The JavaScript editor in Firefox is brilliant, and has saved my ass a few times when a menu system of mine just didn’t work. So yip, strike up another point for Firefox.

My comment was made to atleast give Safari a chance, rather than trash it completely. The site I refered to doesnt talk about Safari in an “out of the box” state at all. It is actually aimed at the SafariStand extension that brings aditional features to Safari:
- Sidebar (thumbnail tabs)
- ‘Stand Bar’ (Bookmark, History, Side Bar compatible, Simple RSS Reader)
- ‘Quick Search’
- ‘Stand Serach’ - supports Spotlight
- ‘Action Menu’
- ‘Arrange Tabs’
- ‘Site Alteration’
- intelligent Plug-in blocking
I agree that Browsershots is too slow. When I dev I usually test in IE, Opera, FF, Flock, Navigator and Safari.
Although my primary browser, I have a negative for FF too. I generally find it slower to start than IE.
Negative for Safari: No decent mouse integration (which is what I love in FF). To open a new Tab I have to hold the command-key and click. Where a simple middle-click in FF does the trick (same for Opera).
And again I have to agree that having to pay for a browser is a crazy idea.
Here is an interesting one (Tom you might have to moderate this bit of the post if it is too explicit). About two weeks ago TechCrunch reported a new adult browser called Heatseek that is a bit of an IE shell (for IE fans).

Here is a WAY better option for the general Mac users who don’t want to use Firefox. “The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari”
