Hoping to Be a Model, I.B.M. Will Put Its Patent Filings Online - New York Times
Another gem from Jessel, the aapstert
I’m not even going to get started on
- Ridiculous American patent law,
- Ridiculous American litigation madness, or
- Ridiculous patents.
It amazes me that we still cling to the outdated, archaic idea of patents. Although I obviously understand there needs to be some incentive for invention, and we live in a capitalist society where profit is the prime motivator. Hence people will try and cloak their new ideas by a veil of secrecy.
But how can we seriously keep on believing this will work in such a knowledge-rich era? Patents and the whole process of filing a secure patent stems from (and worked fine in) the Industrial Revolution. But that is so before-last-century. The solution might not lie with chucking out the whole system, but we need a serious rethink of the whole approach.
